‘Syd Mead: Progressions’ Exhibit at FORT COLLINS MUSEUM OF ART, Fort Collins, Colorado on May 16thSyd Mead: Progressions will feature 50 watercolor renderings by visual futurist, automobile designer and film designer Syd Mead. Mead is best known as the set designer for the 1982 film “Blade Runner” but his futuristic car, yacht, golf course and cityscapes have made him one of the world’s most sought-after design artists. In addition to his work on Blade Runner, Mead also worked on the sets for the films “Tron” and “Aliens”. His unique ability to create worlds of the future with each psychological and technical detail vividly imagined puts him at the forefront of film, automobile and technological design.
With transportation design as his first love, Syd Mead seldom misses an opportunity to provide his unique blend of futurism and believability to those projects consisting of a vehicle that travels from A to B. Whether it be designing solar powered unicycles, show cars, luxury yachts, cruise ships, or the interiors of private 747s, each receives the same attention to detail within a perfectly designed scenario. This combination has become a Syd Mead trademark and has been seen in everything from concept cars for Ford Motor Company to futuristic “hypervans” which have been the subject of his latest full color illustrations.

Known for his stunning production design for futuristic blockbusters – among them Blade Runner, Tron and Aliens – American artist Syd Mead’s distinctive blend of fantasy and the familiar has captivated scifi fans and lovers of dystopia. His work is currently being celebrated at Future (Perfect) – an exhibition at New York City gallery BravinLee Programs (May 11 to June 30 2012).
The exhibition centres on his paintings, with subjects ranging from space stations and alien armies, to unearthly vehicles. Each calls back to an imagined view of the future, a retro dream of modern living: snapshots of humanlike creatures gathering casually next to glossy, stylised vehicles; a panorama of a beautiful island that is at once recognisable and alien; and a beautifully imagined view of the earth glowing blue from behind a richly textured spaceship.
As we start to question our visions of the future, scifi, dystopian and fantasy visuals will play a key role in establishing an aesthetic beyond the digital age. We tackle this idea further in our report Memories of the Future: Designing Tomorrow, which is based on another Future Perfect exhibition in Paris.
